Information

1. Preparing your quilt

Please do not sandwich the layers together, as each layer is loaded separately.

Quilt Top

  • Make sure your seams are sewn securely and are well pressed.
  • Snip all thread ends. Dark threads will show through a lighter fabric.
  • Quilt tops that lay flat will quilt better, without puckers or tucks. Please pay particular attention to the borders: measure from the centre of the quilt, not the outer edges.
  • If possible, make your borders 1/2" wider than the finished size you want, to allow for shrinkage.
  • If your border is pieced, stay-stitch the edges of your quilt, about 1/8" from the edge.
  • If your quilt top has shaped edges or rounded corners, please phone to discuss.
  • If applicable, place a safety pin with a 'Top' label at the centre of the edge you want to be the top.
  • Press your quilt top.

Quilt Backing

  • The quilt backing must be at least 4" larger than the quilt top on all sides, eg. for a 60" × 80" quilt, the backing must be at least 68" × 88".
This is to allow for squaring up the backing for the loading and for shrinkage during quilting.
  • Choose a good quality cotton fabric that will not shadow through the wadding if the quilt top is light colours, and keep in mind the thread colour(s) you may want for the top.
  • If you are joining backing fabrics please remove the selvages, use a 1/2" seam allowance and press the seams open.
  • The backing must have straight sides and square corners.
  • Selvages on the outer edges do not need to be removed.
  • Please note it is unlikely a pieced backing will be centred exactly.
  • Press your quilt backing.

Wadding

  • The wadding must also be at least 4" larger than the quilt top on all sides.
  • Wash your wadding if you wish to avoid a wrinkled effect when your finished quilt is first washed.
